About John Brown Sr.
From Franklin Parish to Nashville
For over three decades, John Brown Sr. was one of Nashville's top touring drummers. Working for recording artists such as Donna Fargo, Jody Miller, Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Roy Clark and Conway Twitty, Brown established himself as one of the best. Raised in Franklin Parish, Louisiana, Brown was fortunate to have a mother who served as the local Church organist, making music available. But it would be an appearance by The Beatles on Ed Sullivan that would alter his future forever. Thankfully at that time, the small rural high school he attended had a band department, and Brown was able to get proper instruction in the fundamentals of percussion. In 2023, Brown would pass away, leaving behind a long legacy of kindness and giving to his fellow musicians.
Scholarship Events
Since its inception in 2023, the JLBS Scholarship has donated more than $15,000 in money and equipment to selected students and public school music programs. Each year the John L Brown Sr. Scholarship Band holds one fundraising event, featuring many of the regions top musicians and educators. Billed as a "A Night of Yacht Rock", the band features the music of artists such as Steely Dan, Little River Band, The Doobie Brothers, Boz Scaggs, Christopher Cross and others. In addition, a silent auction filled with wonderful items also helps us secure the needed funds to continue our mission. The John L Brown Sr. Memorial Music Scholarship is a 501c3 in good standing with the Louisiana Secretary of State.
